FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is counselling?
Counselling provides a safe space where you will be listened to. If you have any concerns or difficulties in your life, feel confused, or have no one you can talk to, counselling is here to support you.
The counselling YES offers is called Person Centred Counselling – this is a type of talking therapy that works in a client led way. Your counsellor is there to fully listen to you, to seek an understanding of your perspective and your point of view on your life. You choose what you bring to counselling and what you talk about.
Your counsellor will not interpret, diagnose, or analyse you. Your counsellor will not direct you down a certain path or advise you over what decisions to make. They will give you a safe, accepting and confidential space in which to explore your thoughts and in doing so, you will be enabled and empowered to find your own way of moving forward.
Some of our counsellors can offer you Cognitive Behavioural Therapy techniques (CBT) – this is more guided talking therapy which concentrates on making changes in your thinking and behaviours.
We work with mild to moderate emotional wellbeing and mental health problems; if we believe you may require more specialist support we will signpost to a more appropriate service.
Who would counsel me?
YES is pleased to have a large team of professional counsellors working within our charity. All counsellors have enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks carried out every 2 years, and are either fully qualified, or in the final stages of their training.
Their case loads are carefully monitored by a supervisor, and all abide by the standards of practice set by the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), with whom YES holds an organisational membership.
What happens when I request support?
After requesting support from our counselling service, we will contact you to arrange a first assessment appointment. This will either be with a member of our counselling team, or one of our trained Support Workers.
During the assessment appointment, we will find out more about what is going on in your life and what has prompted you to seek counselling. We will also discuss what level of support we are able to offer you and provide advice on our current waiting times.
If it is agreed that counselling support would benefit you, we will then confirm your availability for sessions and will place you on our waiting list. When a counsellor becomes available, we will contact you to arrange to arrange your first session.
